Oct 20, 2017· TL;DR dont do it. Get a hose and thoroughly detalc it and use that instead. Have the hose feed into a bag or pouch or pocket or down your top. Just do not use a GP-5 filter. If you do want a useable filter then purchase an FP-5 filter, its a modern universal thread filter that is safe to use.

I have 11 surplus masks from different countries and eras, but don't exactly want to breathe through any of them before cleaning them properly. Even without a filter, they're likely to have dust and other stuff inside from sitting in a warehouse for years, so even without a filter you might still get a nasty cough for a while. This kind of mask is well within reach of a medieval society; really all you need is wet cloth for particulates. They will have a harder time dealing with poisonous gases.
